Army power ahead in National Games

PESHAWAR: Army were inching towards another glorious finish as they were led with 46 golds, 31 silver and eight bronze on the conclusion of the fourth day of the 31st National Games here on Tuesday.
WAPDA were at second place with an overall tally of 81 with 39 gold, 16 silver and 26 bronze medals. Sindh, which had finished third in the last edition held at Karachi in 2007 were at third place with a tally of 25 which included a gold from Ali Mohsin Hazara in karate, six silver and 18 bronze.

They were followed by Railways (5 silver, 14 bronze), Punjab (2 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze), HEC (2 gold, 7 silver, 4 bronze), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (one gold, 2 silver, 9 bronze), Islamabad (one silver, 9 bronze).
Meanwhile, WAPDA won the women’s team event table tennis gold with a victory over Army.
In first match Ayesha from WAPDA defeated Kanwal from Army 11-6, 11-4,11-9 to get a 1-0 lead. In the second tie, Loiza doubled WAPDA’s lead when she defeated Asma 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 before Sadia edged out Seemab from Army 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9 to clinch gold.
WAPDA emerged as champions in karate with 140 points which included five golds, three silver, and one bronze.
Balochistan (105 points) finished second with two gold, two silver, and two bronze while Army (85 points), ended third with a gold, and three silver medals. Punjab got one gold medal, two silver and four bronze with 65 points while Sindh took one gold, three silver with 40 points.
As per details, in women’s individual kata in karate, WAPDA’s Zuhra won gold while Raheela Shaheen from Army ended with a silver medal and Maimoona from Punjab finished with bronze.
In the team kata, WAPDA took gold, Balochistan claimed silver while Punjab ended with bronze. In -50kg, Beenish Akbar from WAPDA claimed gold, Sundas from Sindh took silver while Arifa and Mehak Ikram from Punjab claimed bronze medals.
In the 55kg, Usma Akbar from WAPDA won gold, followed by Hina Azeem from Army with silver while Kanwal from KP and Andleep from Railways shared bronze medals.
In -61kg, Sara Nasir from Army took gold, Naz Gul from Balochistan claimed silver while Beenish Khan and Irum from KP won bronze medals.
In +61kg, Kalsoom Hazara from WAPDA clinched gold, Huma Tabassum from Army claimed silver while Iqra from KP ended with bronze.
In the men’s karate team event, WAPDA took gold, followed by Army and Balochistan with silver and bronze medals respectively.
In squash menĂ­s team event league rounds, WAPDA, HEC, KP and Punjab won their matches.
On Monday, Aamir Atlas won the men’s singles gold with victory over Farhan Mehboob.
In shooting events at Islamabad, in 10m air pistol, Lt Col Idrees Rasheed from Army won gold, Kaleemullah from Army took silver while Shehzad from Navy clinched bronze. In trap Olympics, Major Aamir Iqbal from Army took gold, followed by Usman Sadiq from Sindh with silver and Col Sakhawat Ali from Army with bronze.
